How to Get into UNC Kenan-Flagler

Kenan-Flagler Business School

Program Overview

The UNC Kenan-Flagler brand emphasizes the “&” to show a duality of excellence. “The Bottom Line & The Greater Good,” “IQ & EQ,” and “Tradition & Innovation.”

Kenan-Flagler has a long tradition as a premier center for business education, yet it continues to innovate. The school stands out for its centers of excellence including the Frank H Kenan Institute for Private Enterprise, the Luther H. Hodges Center for Leadership, and the Global Business Center.

The Full-Time MBA program remains very close knit with a class size of just under 300 and the opportunity to develop deep relationships with students, faculty, and staff. Because everyone’s involvement matters in such a small program, Kenan-Flagler wants to see that you have had impact in your previous professional and community roles. Kenan-Flagler also wants to know that you have researched their program and have clear reasons why you want to study business in Chapel Hill. Community and “fit” are very important because students work very closely in study groups especially in their first year. Demonstrating that you work well with others and that you have an engaging, accomplished yet humble style will also serve you well.

Kenan-Flagler has also implemented a new Global Education Initiative that provides students the opportunity to develop deeper understanding of cross-cultural issues and global business practices to add to their ability to effectively conduct business worldwide. This global enrichment is delivered to students through both regular classroom experiences and culture-savvy-workshops.

UNC Kenan-Flagler’s core values include Excellence, Leadership, Teamwork, Integrity, and Community. You can set yourself apart by providing examples of how you have lived these core values in your professional, personal, and community life.

Curriculum

The first semester is front-loaded to provide the core business skills to become broadly literate in the field. Students are assigned to one of eight legacy sections and take all their core classes with the same study group, which builds strong team skills.

Extra Curriculars

UNC Kenan-Flagler students have a proud tradition of excellence in case competitions. In January 2017, Kenan-Flagler’s team won the Deloitte National Case Competition; besting teams from Booth, Tuck, Columbia, Kellogg, and Sloan.

There is also a strong culture to support experiential learning that includes strong clubs, centers, speakers’ series and conferences. You can find students working under the guidance of Chip Snively in the Capital Markets Lab managing investment portfolios.

Culinary and cultural enthusiast can learn about food from around the world at International Food Fest.

The Dean’s Speakers Series provides opportunities to get advice from industry leaders such as Jason Kilar, Founder of Hulu.

Outside of the classroom, combined first and second year legacy sections participate in activities such as kickball and volunteer events to pursue the coveted Legacy Cup. And, of course, come basketball season you will find MBAs cheering on the Tar Heels at Pantana Bob’s.
