If you are looking for an East coast school, with a technology focus and the opportunity to really develop close relationships with all your classmates, Carnegie Mellon’s Tepper School of Business might be a great option for you. Additionally, the Carnegie Mellon campus is one of the most beautiful in the world! There are a lot of freshly manicured green lawns and plenty of space to connect with your classmates. The Tepper School of Business is a very tight-knit community and the students are looking to build strong, close relationships with both their fellow classmates and faculty. Professors at Tepper are extremely smart and most have an open-door policy, so students tend to develop close connections with many professors. Innovation is fundamental to Tepper. The culture is very oriented around leading positive change and questioning the status quo. As one of the most renown schools for engineering and technology, many applicants are attracted to the technical focused MBA curriculum and the plethora of options to take courses in some on the highly acclaimed graduate programs across the campus. The faculty to student ratio is 1:5, one of the lowest among the top ranked MBA programs. The small size of the Tepper class allows most students to get to know almost everybody in the class by the end of the Fall semester.

 Important Insights about Tepper


The curriculum at Tepper is divided into four “Mini” semesters each year. The Mini’s are academically aggressive as, on average, students take five courses each semester. Each Mini is followed by an “Experience Week” that allows students the opportunity to network with companies through treks or trips to different cities, like NYC. Starting during orientation, Tepper students also participate in leadership development sessions that with subsequent sessions occurring through both years. Students are also able to take electives beginning in Mini 3. Spring break and winter break are times when most students go on student-led cultural trips. Finally, Tepper students also engage in a unique capstone opportunity throughout their last two Mini semesters before graduating. These capstones could be a study abroad experience in Germany or Asia, as well as, participating in an applied strategic management simulation known as The Management Game. Additionally, there are 12 concentrations available to students including Ethics and Social Responsibility, Business Technologies, and Operations Research.


There are a ton of social opportunities within the Tepper community and beyond at CMU and in the city of Pittsburgh. Tepper has over 30 clubs available to students and those clubs cover the gamut in terms of professional and social interests. Alpha Club gives students the opportunity to engage in the management of real world investment portfolios. Bizcom supports students in their public speaking skills. The Culinary Club is also popular as the group focuses on exposing students to different types of cuisine from all around the world.  Although it is not an official event, most students will get together for an annual Halloween party that serves as a nice mid-semester break to hang out and get to know your entire class better. Community Day is also a key highlight for all Tepper students. On this special day, current students and some alumni, get together to dedicate their time and efforts in a community improvement project. One year, students volunteered in a multitude of ways at Pittsburgh Botantic Garden.
