If you ever were wondering, the answer is yes; the Kellogg School of Management is named after John L. Kellogg, the son of the world-renowned cereal magnate.
With that out of the way, think very carefully about how you fit the community known for its collaborative and social students while making your own unique contribution to the class. How you will get involved outside the classroom? What do you want to be known for once you graduate with the Kellogg name on your degree?
One of the key phrases you will hear at Kellogg is being “Growth Minded.” The new Global Hub, which opened this March to students and is the signature product of the school’s seven-year transformation plan, stands as an example of the phenomenal results that can happen when a community bands together to thoughtfully plan and prepare for the future. While every business school seeks students who have been successful in the past, Kellogg additionally looks for those who have shown that they are willing to take risks and are constantly looking for ways to improve themselves and the environments in which they live and work. Are you ready to become ‘Kelloggian?’ Think about times in your past that demonstrated how you were willing to step out of your comfort zone and take on chances that enabled you to grow, whether it was professionally, personally or both. How do you intend to grow having all of the resources at Kellogg at your disposal, including the classroom, career groups, social interest groups, internships and more?
Kellogg’s Dean Sally Blount (Kellogg ’92) has been uniquely qualified to lead Kellogg’s Global Hub project with her prior work managing an architecture and design firm and leading a new building expansion at NYU Stern. The “Inspiring Growth” strategy created changes at every level, not only with the new Global Hub, but also with new marketing efforts and logo, refreshed course offerings, new senior leadership and the growth of the one-year MBA.
While the physical space has been greatly transformed, Kellogg continues to look for growth-minded students who embody the collaborative spirit with a low ego, high ambition mindset. Admissions Director Melissa Rapp thinks the new space will amplify this culture at Kellogg by providing so many more meeting spaces and opportunities for students to collaborate such as the new three-story, 6,000-square foot central atrium, Collaboration Plaza, and the new “Inspired Grounds” coffee shop aptly named through student input. Teamwork remains very important in the Kellogg culture. And peer relationships matter…a lot! Even though Kellogg (with approximately 1,300 Full Time MBA students representing the 2 Year, 1 Year, MMM and JD/MBA program) can be considered a big program, there is still an exceptional amount of interaction among classmates.
Important Insights about Kellogg
Students at Kellogg can choose one of seven majors or can decide not to specialize at all and have a general management major noted on their transcript. Students also can choose as many pathways as they would like to take advantage of a deeper dive into topics of interest. The pathways are Data Analytics; Entrepreneurship; Growth and Scaling; Health Enterprise Management; Real Estate; Social Impact; Venture Capital and Private Equity.
Kellogg is on the quarter system, so students can take more electives than programs on a traditional semester system. Students also can place out of courses where they demonstrate mastery of the material, which allows them to take a more advanced elective in that area.
Kellogg students are active. The number of clubs and the range of activities available represent this. Students play a big role in shaping the activities of the school. More than 80% of incoming Kellogg students participate in one of the more than 30 Kellogg Worldwide Experiences and Service Trips (KWEST) that help students bond and explore new locations like Malaysia, Japan, Iceland, Italy, Alaska and Hawaii even before classes begin. As students arrive, they are immersed in the CIM (Complete Immersion in Management) program, where they learn about Kellogg’s culture and activities. There is a club for everyone, and if students can’t find one of interest, they are encouraged to start one.
Career clubs such as Consulting, Investment Banking and Capital Markets, and Marketing are very popular, but there are also many other active clubs as well including a very active Kellogg Women’s Business Association. Social clubs like the Brew ‘n Q club is dedicated to all things beer and BBQ and has over 600 members. The Cork & Screw club meets to learn about wines of the world and has nearly 800 members. There are also many annual conferences and events to get involved in, including the Business of Healthcare Conference, the Private Equity and Venture Capital Conference (Kellogg Spark), and the Emerging Markets Conference.
