Name that Los Angeles organization that has taken off like a rocket? If you guessed Snapchat, you’d be … wrong. In fact, since its IPO, its stock price has fallen by a few dollars. A better guess is the Los Angeles Dodgers, though they are hardly rockets as they remain in third place in the NL West. So the answer is … the UCLA Anderson School of Management.
Long considered a distant second to that other UC b-school at Berkeley, UCLA is looking more and more like a rocket. One key reason is what can be termed the “Snapchat effect” as Los Angeles is now seen as more than just a media hub but as legitimate place to start a company, generating its new nickname, Silicon Beach. Its Price Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation has long been a place where student entrepreneurs can learn about building companies. Over the past couple of years, UCLA has taken significant steps to give students a more holistic entrepreneurial experience. Last year, they opened the Anderson Venture Accelerator where entrepreneurs can find a place to mingle with “their” people and build their companies.
Beyond this, Anderson has just created a specialization in Social Innovation for students who plan a career working for a social impact organization to hone their skills. As Professor Bhagwan Chowdhry, noted, “As young professionals strive to make a positive impact through their careers, they’ll need to navigate the blurred lines between traditional for-profit business and the social sector and the rise of benefit and flexible-purpose corporations.”
But don’t worry; UCLA is still the place to study the business of media with its specialization in Entertainment Management. They boast a star studded cast of faculty, visiting lecturers, and alumni including Susan Wojcicki, the CEO of YouTube, and Amy Powell, the President of Paramount.
So, if you are ready to ride a rocket, now is the time to take a look at UCLA Anderson.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
