As Big as Texas: Tips for McCombs’ MBA Essays

August 13, 2017

Stratus Admissions

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text](Updated for 2019-2020)

The McComb’s School of Business is looking for dynamic, driven people. The program gets better and stronger every year, and they want to admit students who will keep that forward momentum going. As you go about your essays, demonstrate that that’s exactly what you would do.
Be genuine

The McCombs admission readers have a sixth sense for authenticity. If you’re not genuine in your essays and/or video, they’ll know it. So take time to reflect before you write. What are you good at? What do you love to do? What drives and motivates you? Your qualities, talents, and interests combine into something completely unique from anyone else. Demonstrate it. Don’t just write what you think they want to hear.

Get specific about McCombs

Your school knowledge needs to run deep to prove to the admissions reader that McCombs is your top choice. Talk to current students, attend the webinars, and learn as much as you can. Then highlight the classes, programs, and organizations at McCombs that align with your interests and goals. Describe what you will capitalize on when you’re in school and how that will help you develop the skills you need to accomplish great things.

Demonstrate how you will contribute to the community

McCombs is looking for students who will help make the community even better. Instead of talking only about your needs, include examples of how you will give back. Perhaps you will lead a club, start a new one, or set up a recurring volunteer event around Austin. Whatever it is, think big about what your lasting legacy could be and describe it.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
